A Brief History
Soccer has originated over 2,000 years ago in regions that include present-day Greece, China, Rome, and Central America. Though, it all began when rugby football and association football branched off in different directions and the Football Association in England was formed, the sport's first governing body.
England transformed the sport into the "football" we know today by creating the first rules regulations for the game, such as rules involving the forbidding of tripping other players while playing the sport, and touching the ball with your hands.
As time went on, more rules were introduced for the game. For example, in 1891, the penalty kick was introduced, and in 1970, red and yellow cards were introduced during the World Cup Finals. More recently, in 1992, goalkeepers were banned from handling back passes and in 1998 tackles from behind were banned from becoming red-card penalties.
FIFA became a member of the International Football Association Board of Great Britain in 1913.
